Storm PNG

A storm is any disturbed state of a body particularly affecting its surface, and strongly involving a wind force. It can be marked by major disruptions and lightning (a thunderstorm), heavy precipitation (snow storm, rain storm), heavy freezing rain (ice storm), strong winds (tropical cyclone, wind storm) or wind carrying a substance in the atmosphere such as in a dust storm, blizzard, sandstorm, etc.

Storms can harm life and property by storm surges, heavy rain or snow causing flooding or impracticality of roads, lightning, forest fires and vertical wind shear. Systems with significant rainfall and duration help alleviate drought in the places they move. Heavy snowfall may allow special recreational activities to take place that would not otherwise be possible, such as skiing and snowmobiling.

Desert storms are often accompanied by strong winds and pass quickly.

The English word comes from the Proto-Germanic * sturmaz which means "noise, tumult".

Lightning Storm, Port-la-Nouvelle

Storms are created when a low pressure center develops with the high pressure system that surrounds it. This combination of opposing forces can create winds and cause storm clouds such as cumulonimbus clouds to form. Small localized areas of low pressure can form due to the hot air rising from the hot ground, causing smaller disturbances such as dust devils and whirlwinds.

Here are many varieties and names of storms:

Blizzard

There are different definitions of blizzards, both over time and by location. In general, a blizzard is accompanied by gale force winds, heavy snowfall (accumulating at a speed of at least 5 centimeters (2 inches) per hour) and very cold conditions (less than about -10 degrees Celsius or 14 F). Recently, the temperature criterion fell out of definition in the United States.

Bomb Cyclone

A rapid deepening of an area of low cyclonic pressure at mid-latitude, generally occurring over the ocean, but possibly occurring over land. Winds from these storms can be as strong as a typhoon or a hurricane.

Coastal Storm

Large waves of wind and/or storm surges that strike the coastal area. Their impacts include coastal erosion and coastal flooding.

Derecho

A derecho is a long, straight, extended windstorm associated with a terrestrial group of severe, rapidly moving thunderstorms.

Dust devil

A small localized updraft of rising air.

Dust Storm

A situation where winds pick up large amounts of sand or soil, greatly reducing visibility

Firestorm

Firestorms are conflagrations that reach such an intensity that they create and maintain their own wind systems. It is most often a natural phenomenon, created during some of the biggest bush fires, forest fires and wildfires.
